I’ve rewarded myself with a gift, the likes of which I haven’t had in a long time:

Kinja'd!!!

Scotch has become pretty expensive in Ontario so this is a nice treat after not buying Scotch for about a year or so.

The only question for the evening: Chinese food (not authentic; the General Tso’s kind), Thai (actually authentic, a couple of curries would be nice), Vietnamese (pho, and probably some rice-paper rolls) or Indian (also curries)? I certainly won’t be in a condition to drive so I’ll have to order in or walk to a nearby place for takeout; Chinese and Indian would 100% have to be delivered but if I can still stand I could walk to a Vietnamese or Thai restaurant. So, what say you, Oppo?

Indian curries. Can’t beat em.

I would go the Authentic route. Thai food is pretty good.

Every time I eat Indian I think I should do this more often.

I’ve just recently been turned on to Aberlour. Read a review of the Aberlour A’bunadh Cask Strength and was intrigued.

What you have is $60 here, which seems very, very reasonable for a single malt.

How is it? Had it or another Aberlour before?

The restaurant near my place is damn tasty, too.

Nice. We have an amazing Thai place here, I just don’t care for the part of town it’s in. Kinda sketchy.

I always get a vindaloo or a madras, although last time I ordered a vegetarian eggplant dish and it was incredible. A korma is nice way to cool off any hot curries by using more curry.

I’m starting to get really hungry.

Yeah it’s 60 bucks in Ontario, I got it because it was really the most affordable single malt. I’ve had the Aberlour 10 before, but I don’t recall the differences to be honest. I just remember having a flight of Aberlours at a tasting and they were all pretty damn tasty. I like it, it’s kind of sweet (and this is relative to scotch, so it’s more like it’s reminiscent of something sweet) and has a warm, long finish. I’m not going to sit here and say I taste fancy fruits or spices or stuff like that, but it’s damn tasty.

I’ve also had the A’bunadh before at a different tasting but to be honest, as much as I notice obvious differences between scotches, I always have a hard time assigning a fruit/flower/spice/etc. to what I taste in the scotch. All I can say, with confidence, is that you can’t go wrong with Aberlour, regardless of age. I think the 10 was only 5 bucks less than the 12, and both are very good.

I suppose every now and then a man needs to ask himself if he’s willing to become a victim of crime in the pursuit of deliciousness. Most of the time, no, but eventually the craving overcomes all reasonable thought.

Cool. Thank you very much. I’ll probably pick up some 12.

This is so true. If it was on the better side of town, they would know me by name.

The key is to eat it often enough to get your enjoyment from it but not so often that it becomes too familiar and predictable. It’s one of those foods where once you’ve had it the first time you wonder where it has been all your life.

Indian. Definitely Indian. Tandoori prawns with naan, jalfrezi, masala, korma, karahi, vindaloo.... rice just perfectly cooked and seasoned with fennel seeds...

Now I’m hungry, but the nearest Indian places are about 150km away :/

Regular Aberlour is good but A’bunadh is the best. No joke: I regularly bring A’bunadh to blind tastings where it’s up against things at twice or thrice the price and it never, ever loses.

But to be more helpful, Aberlour is basically a big Speyside, a bit like Macallan but, comparing their 12s, is similar in fruit and body, but offers more complexity, less oaky vanilla note and is less smooth.
